Government looks at removing cross-media ownership rulesJune 10th, 2010
Jeremy Hunt has asked Ofcom to examine the case for removing all cross-media ownership rules at a local level, adding that the “challenge and scrutiny” of local journalism is vital to ensuring “greater transparency” in public life .
Setting out plans to ensure “a vibrant local media market in the future” this week, culture secretary Mr Hunt also announced that that the Government would not be continuing with the independently funded news consortia scheme, although he recognised the high degree of innovation and level of partnerships which emerged through the pilot procurement process.

John Simpson: Printed newspapers have a firm future in the modern world

Broadcaster John Simpson believes that printed newspapers have a firm future in the modern world, saying he remembers many examples of people falsely predicting the demise of the medium.
Speaking at the Hay festival, Mr Simpson said he believed newspapers still had a place in the modern world but people were more likely to select one with views in line with their own.

Local TV news pilots scrapped

A pilot scheme to allow a new consortium to take over news programmes on ITV Wales is to be scrapped before a bulletin has been broadcast, UK culture secretary Jeremy Hunt announced today.
The previous Labour government had selected Wales, Scotland and the north-east of England for trial scheme – backed by £7m of public money – to provide regional news on channel 3, after ITV said it had become too expensive.
Mr Hunt said the idea was an "inappropriate" use of public cash, and said the money would go to improving broadband access instead.

Trinity Mirror iPhone App Downloaded 10,000 Times in First Month

An iPhone App launched by Trinity Mirror stormed to the top of the business App download charts, with 10,000 downloads in its first month, The Drum reported.
Last month, Trinity Mirror Digital Recruitment launched its JobSearch UK App which brings together job opportunities from 50 of its regional news websites across the UK.

ABC Regional Newspaper: Jul-Dec 2009

The ABC has today released circulation data for regional newspapers, revealing declines for the majority of newspaper groups and individual titles.
The figures, for July to December 2009, show that the Nottingham & Long Eaton Topper had the largest circulation of the titles in our analysis, while the largest percentage increase was for the Sheffield Weekly Gazette.
While there were large percentage declines for some of the newspaper groups, Northcliffe Media South East Group had a pretty good six months.

NRS figures for January to December 2009 reveal year on year readership growth for titles in the Quality and Popular sectors, while one title in the Mid-Market remained relatively static
In the Quality sector, the Financial Times was up on 2008, while there was a healthy increase for Popular title the Daily Star.
