Homes market ‘robust' as sellers move fast to gain Hips reports edge

June 15th, 2010

SCRAPPING home information packs has kept Wales' housing market in robust shape, according to an industry survey.

Surveyors reported the market responded within days of the announcement that the controversial packs - known by the acronym Hips - would be ditched, saying it had the effect of "stimulating the supply and demand of property".

'Eyesore' flats in Penarth to be demolished

June 14th, 2010

Work to demolish an "eyesore" housing estate recently ranked as Wales' ugliest unique eyesore is to start.  The 329 council-owned flats in Penarth Heights - known as the Billybanks - in Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan are in a prime location, overlooking Cardiff Bay.  But they have become a target for vandals, thieves and squatters over the years.  They will be demolished and replaced by 377 houses and apartments.

In a survey of 5,000 people for the Beautiful Britian magazine, it was voted the ugliest unique eyesore in Wales, and the eighth worst in Britain.  The demolition work marks a turning point for the redevelopment of the 1960s-built estate, which has been blighted by problems and delays.

House prices still rising, says Nationwide

June 3rd, 2010

House prices are still rising, according to the latest monthly survey from the Nationwide building society.

Prices went up by another 0.5% in May, pushing the price of the average UK home up to £169,162 which was £15,000 more than a year ago.

Annual house price inflation fell slightly last month though, from 10.5% to 9.8%.

But the Nationwide said prices might keep on rising modestly as few properties were being put up for sale.

"Housing market conditions remain characterised by thin transaction volumes and a relative scarcity of properties for sale, despite a slow return of more sellers in recent months," said the Nationwide's chief economist Martin Gahbauer.

UK house prices 'lose momentum', says Nationwide

February 26th, 2010

UK house prices fell for the first time in 10 months in February as icy weather put off house hunters, the Nationwide building society has said.

Average property values dropped by 1% compared with January, with the average home worth £161,320.

But the annual rate of increase accelerated to 9.2% because prices dropped faster a year ago.

Mortgage lending also slowed at the start of the year owing to the hangover from the stamp duty holiday.
