Warning as strong car sales surprise experts

June 12th, 2010

Car industry experts warned that strong car sales are unlikely to continue as fears over a double-dip recession continue.  The end of the government- sponsored scrappage scheme at the end of March prompted car industry leaders to predict that new car registrations would fall.

But the latest figures released by the Society for Motor Manufacturers (SMMT) showed that the number of new car registrations in the UK rose by 13.5% in May compared to the same month last year – the 11th consecutive month that sales rose.

The number of new cars sold in the UK during the month was 153,095 compared with 134,858 in May last year.  New registrations were higher in Wales than in the rest of the UK, with 5,636 new vehicles sold in May compared to 4,842 in the same month last year, representing a 16.4% rise.  This year has seen a 20.4% increase in new car registrations in Wales on last year’s figures.

Saab-Spyker exploring stock listing in London

February 12th, 2010

Spyker could be about to bring global car manufacturing to the London Stock Exchange after revealing it is exploring a UK listing.

The move, which is at an exploratory stage, is part of the company's enlargement strategy after it agreed to acquire Saab, the Swedish car maker, from General Motors for $74m (£47m) last month.

The new company, Saab Spyker Automobile, would seek to be dual-listed in London and Stockholm, with Spyker's listing in its home capital, Amsterdam, sacrificed in favour of Sweden.
